Telangana: Vice chancellors meeting UGC norms can stay on
Hyderabad: A bench of the Hyderabad High Court on Thursday struck down three GOs issued by the Telangana state government to make appointments of vice-chancellors to the universities directly by the government, without consulting the Governor.
The High Court bench made it clear that persons who were appointed as vice-chancellors recently, if they satisfied the conditions imposed by the UGC, may continue in office.
The court suspended the operation of the judgement for four weeks on the request of the Telangana advocate general to facilitate the government to challenge the verdict before the Supreme Court.
The petitioners’ contention was that by way of amendment, the government could pick persons of its choice, including politicians and bureaucrats.
