Andhra Pradesh HC orders probe into Covid deaths at RUIA Hospital

The High Court agreed with petitioner\'s contention that a case should be registered into deaths at the hospital and investigated

VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Pradesh High Court on Monday heard a petition on deaths of Coronavirus patients at the RUIA Hospital in Tirupati.

Counsel for petitioner Y. Balaji sought to point out that though the deaths had occurred due to negligence on part of government and hospital officials, no FIR has been registered as yet. Further, there is no clarity on how many people died due to shortage of oxygen.

Counsel also pointed to inequality in payment of ex-gratia. While Rs.1 crore had been announced for victims of LG Polymers in Visakhapatnam, it is only Rs.10 lakh for those who died at RUIA Hospital.

The High Court agreed with petitioner's contention that a case should be registered into deaths at the hospital and investigated. The court directed state government to inquire as to whose negligence led to the deaths at RUIA Hospital.

The High Court adjourned hearing on the petition for two weeks after asking the government, police and hospital to file their counters.
