THANJAVUR: Permitting proposed hydrocarbon projects in Cauvery delta will destroy the granary of Tamil Nadu which has thousands of years of history from Chola period, said S.S. Palanimanickam, Thanjavur MP at Thirukanurpatti, 20 kms from here on Friday.

Speaking at the grama sabha meeting he said, “both our culture and agriculture should be preserved.” “In Israel, they are converting deserts into cultivable lands. But here central and state governments are trying to convert cultivable lands into deserts”said Palanimanickam. He appealed to the people to resist the move.

Tamil Nadu Government should take a stand like former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, who banned the methane extraction project. This government should also stop the hydrocarbon projects similarly, he urged.

Meanwhile, grama sabha meetings were held in all the 589 village panchayats in Thanjavur district on Friday. A. Annadurai, Thanjavur district collector participated in the grama sabha meeting at Poondi near Ammapettai.

He said that patta transfer camps were being held on June 28 and 29 to help farmers covered under ‘Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada’ scheme. He appealed to the people to utilise the scheme of taking silt and clay from tanks and ponds belonging to PWD and rural development department for enriching fields.
