Hyderabad: Proposal to dig 2.72 lakh pits pending

He said that the project required Rs 5,500 crore to implement. It requires Cabinet approval.

Hyderabad: A proposal by Jawaharlal National Technical University to construct 2.72 lakh rainwater harvesting pits in the city to tackle urban flooding has been pending with the state government for over a year on the grounds that funds are not available.

Further delay will push the city into a deeper crisis and could damage civic infrastructure.

This comes amid a NITI Aayog report that Hyderabad is among the 20 cities that will soon run out of groundwater.

A senior GHMC official said that the proposal was sent to the government last year. Citing expenditure, the entire project to prevent urban flooding proposed by JNTU experts was put in cold storage.

He said that the project required Rs 5,500 crore to implement. It requires Cabinet approval.

The official said that even if the project is cleared in the latter half of the year, it would take at least five years to complete it in phases.
