COONOOR: Accumulating garbage and other wastes and the lax attitude of the municipality in Coonoor has spurred wild boars movement to the town limits and is posing a threat to hygiene besides paving way for man-animal conflicts.
Though the Nilgiris district administration has made good efforts for the Swachh Bharat mission and “Sweep blue mountains” initiative to keep the hills clean and tidy, the way the garbage is accumulating in Coonoor town limits proves that municipal are not ready to heed the instructions of the district administration.
Mr.Rajeshkumar James, secretary of the Citizens’ Forum of Coonoor, said that while it is the responsibility of the municipal administration to remove garbage in time, residents too should be responsible to keep their environs clean and not throw the garbage on the roadside.
He said they should alert municipal health wing officials for the door-to-door collection of garbage, in case the concerned conservatory staff fail to turn up. The municipality should evolve mechanism to monitor the garbage disposal system to check the straying of wild boars, he urged.
Meanwhile, Mr.N.Sadiq Ali, founder of the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Trust, said that effective garbage disposal is the only solution to check the entry of wild boars into the interior part of the town. If humans happen to go near the comfort zone of wild boars, they will turn ferocious and try to charge and harm humans. This will lead to unwanted complication and man-animal conflict,” he warned.
