‘CM health insurance, a boon to poor’

This not only affects that particular individual but also the entire family.

TIRUCHY: City-based nephrologist, Dr T. Rajarajan, emphasised that people who have blood pressure, sugar, diabetics, and also those who are beyond 60 years of age, should take regular urine and blood checks once in six months every year, so as to detect any chronic kidney diseases.

Dr Rajarajan, consultant nephrologist, Kavery hospital here, told DC that WHO had declared that kidney disease is the eighth chronic disease, and as per the 2010 scientific data, out of 10 lakh people 432 are affected by kidney diseases, and now it could be more.

He said, nowadays people in their productive age of 30 to 50 years are unfortunately affected by kidney diseases. This not only affects that particular individual but also the entire family. They face economic strain.

Asked about the cause for kidney diseases, Dr. Rarajarajan said, there are several reasons including high sugar, diabetics, obesity, less resistance power, kidney stone and genetic reason, water contamination, food habits, self-medication, etc.

He said at the primary stage that there will not be any symptoms of the disease, but routine health check-up or master health check-up can now reveal 99 percent of the lurking disease. He warned those having symptoms like frequent vomiting, nil hunger, breathing problems, tiredness and anemic problems, swelling of legs, face and sleepless nights. They should consult the doctor immediately, besides going on clinical analysis, he added.

He said in Kavery Hospital here, doctors have performed about 500 kidney transplants in the last 10 years through A B O comparable group system. But for the last two years, they started to perform kidney transplantation through A B O comparable group system, thanks to the scientific advancements and they achieved the success rate of 95 percent, he added. Nowadays, a person who undergoes kidney transplantation, can lead normal life for at least 10 to 12 years and thereafter, he can go for another transplantation.

Dr Rajarajan wanted awareness on the disease to be spread further in all possible ways. He further added that Tamil Nadu stood first among other states in cadaver transplants. Further, the Chief Minister's comprehensive health insurance scheme is creating a revolution in which numerous poor and downtrodden people have undergone kidney transplantation free of cost.
