Bengaluru: PIL against illegal religious structures

The petition has been filed following a direction of the High Court on June 21.

Bengaluru: The Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court has filed a suo motu public interest litigation seeking directions to the state government to demolish illegal religious structures in public places.

The petition has been filed following a direction of the High Court on June 21.

The Supreme Court in a special leave petition in 2006 had issued directions to all the states to demolish illegal religious structures. Despite this, the state government had not taken any steps to comply with the order.

On January 31, 2018, the apex court issued directions to the Karnataka High Court to supervise the implementation of its order in an effective manner and if necessary, entertain a suo motu petition.

As apex court directions were not implemented effectively, a suo motu petition was filed. The high court on June 21, 2019 issued directions to register a suo motu petition.
