Mysuru: With heavy rains in Wyanad, the Kabini reservoir which had filled up earlier this month, released a huge quantum of water to Tamil Nadu for the fifteenth day on Thursday.
The state has so far received 28 per cent excess rainfall this month, according to the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre. With good rains in the Cauvery catchment area too, other reservoirs in the basin also received good inflow on Thursday.
Kabini, which received as much as 12,000 cusecs, released 15,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu. The water level at the reservoir on Thursday was 2282.35 feet as against its capacity to hold 2284 feet..
At Krishna Raja Sagar, the water level on Thursday was 105.63feet, and inflow was 3995cusecs. The water level at the dam on the same day last year was 68.35 feet.
At Harangi, the water level on Thursday was 2842.68feet as against its capacity to store 2859 feet. The inflow was 3292 cusecs and outflow, 30 cusecs. At Hemavathi, the water level on Thursday was 2903.91 feet as against its capacity to hold 2922 feet. The inflow was 6273 cusecs, and outflow, 1000 cusecs.
The authorities at Kabini are not letting it fill to the brim, keeping the water level two to four feet below the optimum level of 2284 feet since June 14. According to sources, the reservoir fills to the brim on the day that the Chief Minister of the state offers Bagini to the Kapila river as a gesture of thanksgiving to Mother nature for the rain received. Kabini happens to be the first reservoir to fill up completely so far this year.
