Vijayawada: Unhygienic conditions at Swaraj Maidan rythu bazaar in the city was turning out to be problematic to the citizens.

Recent rains have damaged the temporary flooring works and as a result, water got stagnated in the market causing inconvenience to the customers and sellers.

Frequent rains in recent times have had severe impact on the rythu bazaar and the market got filled up with huge dumps of mud. “Rythu bazaar is most preferred by the citizens considering the affordable price of veggies. But stagnated water and untidy atmosphere is causing discomfort to the buyers. The market got slurry and buyers were not even able to stand,” said M. Sandhya Rani, a home-maker.

“Farmers were leaving vegetable waste beside their stalls and rotten foul smell in the market is intolerable. The market has become a hub for house flies and we are afraid of buying the vegetables considering the spread of contagious diseases,” said M. Raja-rathnam, a railway emp-loyee.

Stagnant water at the market was filled with mosquito larvae and sellers at the market are getting prone to malaria and other mosquito-bor-ne diseases. “Untidiness in the rythu bazaar has become common and the condition getting worse due to rains. Sellers and workers at the market are getting viral fevers with the spread of mosquitoes. Repairs made by agriculture marketing department are not up to the mark,” said a farmer from Kankipadu operating a stall at the market.

When contacted, officials of the agriculture marketing department said that rain was the main cause of water stagnation and they brought it to the notice of higher officials.
