Hyderabad: Hundreds of students went on a rampage at the Narayana Junior College at Nizampet crossroad in the wee hours of Wednesday damaging property worth lakhs. The students broke windows, damaged furniture, water tank, beds and threw out tables and chairs from classrooms.
Trouble broke out after some students were refused leave to go home. The students were also angry with the food supplied by the management and their rooms.
As the students went berserk for hours, the watchmen called emergency services and the police. A large police force in riot gear rushed to the spot and restrained the students.
According to the college management, the riot started at 1 am.
“I woke up hearing the noise. On two floors, students were throwing chairs and benches out of the windows. I could see tables flung into the air and landing on the floor,” said one of the students who did not participate in the riot.
The students picked up sticks and stones and started smashing lights inside the building.
“They also tore and threw out beds and cots. One group of students also tried to burn a bunch of documents they got from some classroom. Some students tried to break into office rooms,” a student said.
Though the management came to the college and tried to control the students, their attempts went futile. “By the time our team reached there, broken furniture were already on the ground outside the college building. We warned them not to indulge in vandalism and agreed to hear their grievances”, said KPHB inspector Kushalkar.
After the riot, the management was not ready to lodge a complaint against the students. “We did not book any cases against the students as the management did not file a complaint,” said inspector Kushalkar.
Later, the school allowed the students to go on leave and visit their homes.
