German language a big draw at Bangalore University

The admissions at the Centre are open till July 24 on a first come-first serve basis with no special reservations.

The admissions for various courses at Centre for Global Languages, Bangalore University are underway for the upcoming academic year. This year also German continues to top the list with maximum queries and admissions.

According to co-ordinator Jyothi Venkatesh, the demand for German is relatively higher as countries where the language is spoken is opted by both students and professionals. “A major share of German admissions this year is from IT and mechanical engineers looking forward to expand career opportunities at Germany, Austria and Switzerland. These countries are also preferred by Indian students for higher education,” she said.

The institute offers four levels of studies for German and French: Certificate, Diploma, Higher Diploma and Diploma while students are admitted only for certificate courses in Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean.

The co-ordinator said Asian languages are gradually catching up, even though the general trend to follow the West is still persistent in India. “Even though European countries continue to attract more people including students and professionals, Asian companies setting up offices at various cities in south India have contributed to the rise in intake for the latter seeing an increase,” she said.

International relations of India with the countries concerned is another factor that impacts the trend of admissions at the Centre. “Japanese is the most preferred Asian language now following the developments in the diplomatic relations between the countries. At the same time, the fall in Chinese intakes can be attributed to the recent heightened tension at the borders,” she said.

The institute, which used to offer courses in Finnish and Arabic, had decided to discontinue them following scarcity of students. The admissions at the Centre are open till July 24 on a first come-first serve basis with no special reservations. Sources said that 55 per cent of the total number of seats at the institute is still up for grabs.
