All sand to be sold online from July 1
Chennai: From Saturday, builders and those in need of sand can buy the much in demand material at the click of a mouse or by just swiping on their smartphone. TN Government on Wednesday launched an exclusive website and mobile application to enable sand buyers to order them online.
The website — www.tnsand.in — and the mobile application — tnsand — which can be downloaded from Android play store was launched by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami at a simple ceremony on Wednesday morning.
The website and the mobile app are aimed at ensuring transparency in the sale of sand in Tamil Nadu, which has been a political hot potato for long.
Government sources said the online sales of sand would cater to the needs of the construction industry, which needs an uninterrupted supply of sand.
"Further, trucks involved in supplying sand can now receive the same from quarries and other designated spots at specifically allotted time slots, rather than waiting for long hours outside the quarries," the statement said.
Sources in the real estate and construction industry, said the move would ensure transparency in the sale of sand across Tamil Nadu as one can order sand via online and even track the order through the same method. The move also comes two months after Mr Palaniswami announced that all sand quarries would be closed down in the state in three years and the government would take up mining, storing and selling sand.
