Traffic jams clog Hyderabad roads as rains wreak havoc
Hyderabad: Overnight heavy rain followed by continuous drizzling on Tuesday caused traffic jams on many roads in the city. The ongoing works of Hyderabad Metro Rail, closure of junctions with a provision for U-turn a furlong ahead, rain water stagnation on some of the roads and lack of monitoring by traffic police at the junctions added to traffic jams.
It was literally a gridlock as vehicular traffic came to a complete halt from Afzalgunj to High Court Road, having its impact on surrounding corridors too.
“We are stuck in the traffic jam for more than an hour. There was no prior information that the traffic is being diverted due to protest by lawyers at the high court. I am a lawyer, too. We have been put to inconvenience, which could have been avoided,” said an advocate stuck up in traffic jam near the high court.
A long row of cars stood in queue up to the high court from Madina crossroads. Only those whose cases were listed were allowed into the court premises, that too after checking their identity.
The queue of cars increased, adding to the gridlock. DCP (traffic) AV Ranganath who was personally involved in clearing traffic jams at high court road said they cleared the traffic jam by afternoon.
Meanwhile, vehicular traffic moved at snails pace in Kukatpally, Hitec City Road and Sangeet Crossroads to Begumpet and to Jubilee Hills. “God knows when this metro rail works would be over. The pillars are on the middle of the road narrowing down the carriage way. The mud from the dug-up area for installation of metro pillars is extending to the road. There is a risk of vehicles skidding, and one has to ride very carefully during the rainy season,” said KS Goud, a medical representative and resident of Mayur Marg.
The roads dug up by various agencies like Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board and APTransco at Minister’s Road, Srinagar Colony and other places in the city only added to the woes of motorists.
