Tamil Nadu to probe organ removal
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Tamil Nadu government has initiated a probe into the removal of organs of a brain dead youth belonging to Meenakshipuram in Palakkad at a private hospital in Salem allegedly without the consent of his relatives. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami informed Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that the Tamil Nadu medical and rural health services director would be probing into the allegations,'' according to an official press release issued here on Monday.
Mr. Vijayan had earlier sent a letter to the his Tamil Nadu counterpart the other day seeking a probe after the relatives raised the serious allegation. He also urged that proper treatment should be provided to others injured in the accident, along with the deceased youth.
Twenty-four-year-old Manikantan died at VIMS Hospital in Salem after he suffered an accident on his way to Meenakshipuram from Chennai along with few others. He was declared brain dead on May 22. His organs including both kidneys, both corneas, liver, intestines, pancreas, heart and lungs were retrieved at the hospital. While the authorities of VIMS Hospital, Salem, claimed that consent was taken before retrieving the organs, the relatives alleged that their signatures were taken on certain forms without explaining the reason.
