Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the BBMP to submit a status report on action taken on solid waste management. Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner (Health and Solid Waste Management), told the court that steps are being taken to install smart bins for collecting segregated waste.
He said the process of installing such bins with capacity of 1.5 tonnes is underway. When the court suggested expediting the process and ensuring at least 100 such bins by the next date of hearing, he said he will file a status report within one month. He was granted two weeks to file the affidavit. He submitted that around 2,000 litter bins were installed in different places in Bengaluru, but around 500 bins were either damaged or stolen.
"Another 2,000 litter bins have to be installed by the next date of hearing in different commercial areas. These bins should be efficiently cleared. Action plan initiated shall also be reported to the court by the next date of hearing," it said.
On legacy waste in areas where KCDC plants have been established resulting in serious health hazard, the BBMP submitted that KCDC has floated tenders to remove the legacy waste and action in this regard is likely to start by next week. "The Managing Director of the KCDC shall be present on the next date of hearing with a status report regarding the actual amount of legacy waste removed and the proposal for removal of balance within the prescribed time span," the court said. The court adjourned the matter to June 29.
