Chennai: Tasmac trucks with liquor stocks worth Rs 80 lakh set ablaze

There were another 36 trucks in the three-acre godown loaded with beer and foreign made Indian liquor, police said.

Chennai: A major fire accident was averted in Kancheepuram liquor godown on Monday morning after the public alerted the fire service. Tension prevailed after miscreants set ablaze three trucks that had stocks of liquor worth over Rs 80 lakh.

According to police sources, the incident occurred in the state owned godown of Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (Tasmac), which deals with the wholesale liquor trade for four districts of TN.

The public who noticed fire from the godown informed the fire service. Soon the fire engines rushed within a short span of time.

There were another 36 trucks in the three-acre godown loaded with beer and foreign made Indian liquor, police said. The godown is quiet popular among locals and three security personnel are usually posted there, but on Sunday, only one personnel was on duty.

The drivers after parking their lorries went for a nap when the incident happened and the CCTV camera recordings are not clear due to non functional lights, sources said.

“There are factional fights among Tasmac staff and we also suspect the hand of insiders. Besides whether any fringe element was involved in the fire is also under probe. The godown on daily basis stocks liquor from manufacturing units and caters to the Tasmac outlets located in Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Vellore. A case has been registered and investigations are on,” police said.
