Telangana allows boating on revived tanks

Private agencies will be allowed to organise boating and water sports facilities.

Hyderabad: The government has decided to promote boating and water sports in minor irrigation tanks, which were renovated during Mission Kakat-iya programme across the state.

Private agencies will be allowed to organise boating and water sports facilities.

The government, however, has made it clear that the irrigation department will not be responsible for any accident or damage that may occur during boating and private agencies will be held responsible.

It stated that the irrigation department will not pay any compensation or costs or reimburse any amount to victims in case of any mishap. Collectors have been authorised to select the private agencies.

Orders issued by irrigation principal secretary Vikas Raj on Saturday laid down several conditions. These include that irrigation and fishing facilities should not be disturbed by boating, and agriculture will be given priority over boating. Fishermen will continue to have priority.

The facility will be open to inspection without notice, and permission can be cancelled at any time without citing any reason. Lifting or diverting of water for any purpose will not be allowed and the natural flow from the catchment areas should not be disturbed.
