India's tourism revenue up, says Culture minister

Union minister of Culture and Tourism Dr Mahesh Sharma said the country has achieved a three-time growth in the tourism sector this year .

Tiruchy: Union minister of Culture and Tourism Dr Mahesh Sharma said the country has achieved a three-time growth in the tourism sector this year the country netted revenue of Rs 1.56 lakh crore, as against Rs 1.33 lakh crore last year from tourism.

He told newsmen at Tiruchy airport on Sunday that “our growth rate in tourism is 15.4 per cent as against the world’s 4.6 per cent.” At least one city in Tamil Nadu would be selected for being made into a model ‘tourism city’, he said.

He said the Centre was planning to develop tourism in Tamil Nadu, as the State has a rich potential in heritage and culture. “What we got in Keeladi excavation shows the deep-rooted culture here. Civilization was there in this part of the country long back,” he added.
