Kempegowda International Airport road plunges to chaos
Bengaluru: The Bengaluru traffic police withdrew the diversions made on Airport Road leading to Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on experimental basis within few hours after the roads leading to airport witnessed traffic jams at various junctions, on Saturday.
Traffic police had announced the diversions in a bid to decongest the traffic flow towards airport on Friday. Though the police withdrew the changes within few hours nonetheless, a few diversions were kept intact on Saturday.
The diversions were scheduled from 8 am to 8 pm but withdrawn by 12 noon after there were severe traffic jams. Vehicles which were headed to KIA via Raj Bhavan and Mekhri Circle to Basaveshwara Circle and High grounds were diverted towards T Chowdaiah Road, Rajabhavan Junction- LRDE Junction, High Grounds Junction and by making it a two-way road.
Whereas vehicles heading from BHEL to Mekhri Circle were diverted to Cauvery Elements left turn heading to Ramashree Road to reach Mekhri Circle, which merged with Cauvery Circle and Jayamahal Road.
On the other hand, the vehicular traffic going from Mekhri circle to K K Road, had to take a detour to T Chowdaiah Road while to reach High Grounds Junction-LRDE Junction and Basaveshwara Circle.
“There were enough hoardings installed on the KIA Road to inform road users about the road diversions on Saturday, the traffic at many places came to halt. The experiment was also withdrawn as the cascading effects troubled even in other parts,” said police officials.
Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Hitendra said, “The timings of the signals in Chalukya signal and free left, right turns have been made in order to lessen the traffic congestion. This experiment helped us to relook the traffic status towards KIA.”
