Ooty: Social media playing spoilsport for tourism
OOTY: Tourism stakeholders in the Nilgiris have appealed to tourists not to panic about false information on social media about floods in the Nilgiris.
Videos and photographs showing floods and landslides in Nilgiris have gone viral on social media over the past two days. A picture of the collapse of a retaining wall on private property has also been circulating.
N.Chandrasekar, secretary of the Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association, charged that these videos and photographs were posted by some anti-social elements on social media to spoil tourism. He said that it has begun to take a toll of summer tourism in the Nilgiris.
“Summer is the peak tourist season in the Nilgiris. We appeal to the district administration to issue statements in media about the real situation in the Nilgiris to instill confidence in tourists. We appeal to police to keep an eye on social media to book culprits who try to give the wrong picture on the situation in the Nilgiris,” he urged.
Meanwhile, the Ooty-Ketti summer special joy rides/round trips in Nilgiris Mountain Railway(NMR), which began on Saturday as a weekend specials in summer, will become a regular affair from Monday(April 29), the southern railway Salem division announced today.
