Fake bank a/c not of cardinal

The probe team also clarified that the Cardinal has not held any bank accounts as mentioned in the documents.

Kochi: In a latest development in the alleged forging of documents against the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church Cardinal George Alencherry, the police team probing the case found that the bank documents produced as evidence against the Cardinal were forged.

The probe team also clarified that the Cardinal has not held any bank accounts as mentioned in the documents.

“We have also found there is no such bank account used for transferring funds as alleged by the complainants. However, an investigation is underway to find out who forged those documents,” said K.A. Vidyadharan, deputy superintendent of police, Aluva, who is investigating the case.

The case relates to a complaint filed by Father Joby Maprakavil, executive director of Syro-Malabar Internet Mission, before the Kochi Central police on February 25, 2019. The case was later transferred to Thrikkakara police station.

Thelakkatt, formerly official spokesman for the church and head of the English edition of the church publication Sathyadeepam, produced forged documents to defame the Cardinal before the synod of the church. The documents were handed over by Father Thelakkatt to Bishop Manathodath during the synod that began on January 7, 2019 at the Mount St. Thomas church headquarters.

The probe team had earlier recorded the statement of Alencherry in connection with the case.
