Cyclone Fani may not hit coastal Andhra Pradesh

Cyclone Fani is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.

Visakhapatnam: The cyclonic storm Fani that is brewing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to move away from the Indian coastline even as it gathers strength, according to the latest information available on Sunday.

It intensified into a severe cyclonic storm during the day moved northwestwards and lay centred at 990 km southeast of Chennai and 1,170 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.

Cyclone Fani is expected to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. The Indian Metrological Department in its bulletin said that it would grow into an ‘extremely severe cyclonic storm’ carrying winds up to 180 kmph.

It is very likely to move northwestwards till Wednesday evening and thereafter recurve north-northeastwards gradually. It may move away to a safe distance from the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts even as it gathers strength. But the winds that it is packing may be felt in the coastal areas.

Light to moderate rainfall may occur at many places along the AP coast on Wednesday and Thursday.
