Chennai police, team clean fishing harbour at Kasimedu
Chennai: Joining hands with Chennai corporation, fisheries department and fishermen association, Chennai police commissioner A.K. Viswanathan inaugurated the cleaning drive at Kasimedu fishing harbour on Saturday.
Apart from flagging off the drive, Viswanathan also lent his hands to the civic officials and volunteers in cleaning the harbour area. In a mass cleaning drive, more than 500 police personnel, 150 fisheries officials, 50 Chennai Corporation workers and members 32 fishermen associations took part. “More than 1,000 persons participated in the drive,” a press release said.
During the drive, damaged and unused boats, fishing equipment and others were removed using earthmovers. A total of 131 tonnes of waste was removed on Saturday.
Stressing the importance of clean harbour, A.K. Viswanathan urged the fisherman to keep the harbour and maintain it clean. Meanwhile, volunteers also said that two garbage trucks would remove the garbage from the harbour once a week.
