Bengaluru: The residents of Indiranagar gathered at the 100 feet road and 12th main junction on Friday evening to protest against the blatant commercialization of the area.
There are 63 bars and pubs in the area and they are violating laws in broad daylight, said Aruna Newton, president of the Resident Welfare Association of the area.
"There are building norms that are violated, the footpath has become valet parking areas, not to mention the noise levels that go on beyond 1 am. Indiranagar has become a hub for drugs and prostitution. Our voices need to be heard."
This is the sixth time that the residents have come together to protest against the issue. The microbreweries in the area, along with the open terrace bars are all in violation, said Sridhar Pabbisetty, CEO of the Namma Bengaluru Foundation who was present at the protest.
S. Raghu, MLA of the C.V. Ramnan Nagar constituency and Suresh Kumar, MLA of Rajajinagar constituency met the protesting residents.
"This protest sends out a message to the excise and the revenue departments and the BBMP. They couldn't have establishments without their permission. The authorities must uphold the law. We will raise this matter in the assembly. The authorities must come to us, we won't go to them! This will turn into an even bigger public agitation if this issue is ignored," said Mr Suresh Kumar.
