On-the-spot licence at 4 centres in Kerala

Facility at Capital city, Parassala, Kannur & Kozhikode.

Thiruvananthapuram: The motor vehicles department will launch on-the-spot driving licence facility at four places in the state from next week. The licences will be issued a few hours after the test at the automated driving licence centres at Thiruvananthapuram city, Parassala (Thiruvananthapuram rural), Kannur and Kozhikode.

On-the-spot vehicle fitness certificate facility will also be introduced in due course at these places. Sources said that though the facility was scheduled to be launched on Friday, it had to be postponed to May 3 due to inconvenience.

With the introduction of the system, the motor vehicles inspectors will issue the licence at the test centres bringing in more transparency to the procedure, sources said.

At present, driving licences are issued from the regional transport offices either the same day or the next.

This was causing inconvenience to the candidates as testing grounds and regional transport offices are at different locations.

Thiruvananthapuram regional transport commissioner Murali Krishnan said that all arrangements were in place at the testing ground near Muttathara.

Meanwhile, the introduction of reverse and gradient tests for driving licence is still uncertain as the High Court had stayed a directive of Transport Commissioner S. Ananthakrishnan in this regard. The driving schools were up in arms against the tightening of the driving test procedures. The new norms were introduced to ensure that only the deserving got the licences, said sources.
