Hyderabad High Court stops cops from inspecting colleges
Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday granted interim stay till Friday on the decision of the TS government to constitute police teams for inspections of functioning of private colleges in the state.
Justice P.V. Sanjay Kumar was dealing with a plea by Bhavita Degree College and four others challenging a memo issued by the government on April 8, 2016 to constitute police teams to conduct checks in colleges.
Counsel for the petitioners S. Sriram submitted that the action was ultra vires the AP Education Act, 1982 and also contrary to GO Ms No. 32 dated February 2, 1988.
Expressing surprise at the decision, the judge asked the government whether it has lost trust in its education department.
“Why should the police be involved?” Justice Kumar asked. He wanted to know what would the police do with the college details and also the effect cops descending on the college premises would have on students.
When the judge sought the response of government counsel A. Sanjeev Kumar, he sought time till Friday to get instructions from the government.
As Mr Sriram told the court that the police teams had already been constituted and may visit the colleges any time, the judge granted an interim stay and posted the case to Friday.
