Opposition walks out over politicisation of cops'

PWD minister G. Sudhakaran, who stood in for chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, said that the crime rate had come down after the LDF came to power.

Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition staged a walkout in the Assembly saying that the LDF government’s politicisation of the police force had allowed quotation gangs to have an unbridled run in the state. The issue of quotation gangs was raised by Congress MLA K. Muraleedharan, while moving an adjournment motion in the Assembly on Wednesday, in the context of the murder of radio jockey Rajesh by a gang at Pallikkal near Kilimanoor here on March 27.

PWD minister G. Sudhakaran, who stood in for chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan, said that the crime rate had come down after the LDF came to power. He said if the average annual murders during the UDF tenure was 302, it has come down to 82 under the LDF watch. Mr Muraleedharan, while moving the motion, said that the police had no control over the criminal gangs. He also charged that the police force was also highly criminalised. “As if the criminals out in the streets were not enough, the LDF government has also let out convicts from jails so that they too could partake in the bloodbath,” Mr Muraleedharan said.
