Bengaluru: Cops open fire on rowdy

Rupesh, associates, attack policemen with knife to prevent arrest.

Bengaluru: Despite Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy’s strict orders to police to curb rowdy activities in the city and Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar’s instructions to act to sternly deal with those who attack policemen on duty, the rowdy sheeters continue to attack policemen with impunity.

In the latest such incident in Cottonpet police station limits on Wednesday, the police had to open fire on a notorious rowdy Nirmal alias Ropesh (36), when he attacked the policemen who had gone to arrest him.

Nirmal was involved in multiple criminal activities, including murder, and was absconding for the past three years. Based on a tip off, the Cottonpet and Chamarajpet police formed a team and went to arrest Nirmal, who was allegedly planning to eliminate another rowdy Atush. He and his associates were roaming in Cottonpet and Chamarajpet areas, where Atush used to frequent, to track his movement.

Around 3 am, the police received information that Nirmal was at the Lingayat crematory near Jinke Park, along with his associates. The moment police reached the spot, two of his associate ran away while Nirmal along with his associate Kichcha stayed back. As the head constable Abdul Rehman moved towards Kichcha to arrest him, he assaulted Rehman with a knife and fled.

Nirmal too, in a bid to escape, attacked another head constable M Kumar with a knife. But the police shot at Nirmal on his leg and arrested him. A manhunt has been launched to arrest Nirmal’s three associates, while he is undergoing treatment at the Victoria Hospital.
