Advisors can't order govt staffers: CEO

On the first day of the Model Code of Conduct coming into effect, the commission registered three cases of violation.

Bengaluru: In what can be termed as a major embarrassment to the government, the Election Commission on Wednesday said government employees should not take orders from any advisors to the government.

During an interaction with reporters on Wednesday, Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar was asked about the active role being played by security advisor Kempaiah in the affairs of the police department even after the model code of conduct came into force. Mr Kumar said, “We will probe the matter. We have to look into the nature of his appointment. No government employee should take orders from any advisors.”

He released a poster of former India cricketer Rahul Dravid requesting voters to exercise their franchise in the Assembly polls.

On the first day of the Model Code of Conduct coming into effect, the commission registered three cases of violation. A special mutton meal hosted by a political leader in Chikkaballaura was raided and food seized. In Honnavara, Rs 7 lakh being carried without any valid papers was seized from an individual. In Vijayapura, sarees being distributed by a leader were seized.

On the government announcing thenames of vice-chancellors, Mr Kumar said the government should not make any fresh appointments, let alone announce the names for V-C posts.
