Chennai: Tanker operators asked to refrain from strike

There would be a shortage of water supply from 6 am on March 31 to April 1, for 24 hours.

Chennai: Senior officers of the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) parleyed with CMWSSB water tanker contractors to not side with private contractors as the latter plan a strike in the next few days.

According to sources in CMWSSB, managing director, V Arun Roy, has requested contractors to not participate in the strike taking the common man’s plight during this summer into consideration. He asked metro water officials to instruct contractors, in case a strike happens, for increased tanker trips during the days of the strike so that more water is supplied to residents of these areas and people can store sufficient water.

As another strike of the water tankers seems imminent, a release from the CMWSSB said that due to maintenance work at the 100MLD Nemmeli desalination plant, there would be a shortage of water supply from 6 am on March 31 to April 1, for 24 hours.

The areas that would be affected are Nemmeli, South Chennai areas like Adyar, Besant Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery Part, Taramani Part, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Perungudi, ECR and OMR.
