Kidnapped boy rescued in six hours by Chennai police

6-yr-old goes missing from apartment play area.

Chennai: In a swift operation, the Chennai police on Sunday rescued the 6-year-old son of a businessman who had been kidnapped from the play area of his apartment complex in Thirumangalam.

The police cracked the case in 6 hours and arrested two suspects from near Tambaram sanatorium railway station.

According to police, the boy, Vel Kandaswamy, son of Shanmughavel, and a student of SBOA school, went missing from the apartment on Sunday while playing.

Later his father received a call on his mobile asking for a ransom of '4 lakh for safely releasing his son. “When we came to know about the incident, a special team was formed under the direct supervision of SN Seshasayee, additional commissioner of police, Chennai, north to crack the case.

The team with technical assistance tracked the mobile number of the suspects and told the parents keep the abductors engaged when they call,” a senior police official said.

The parents were told by the suspect to reach the railway track near the Tambaram sanatorium railway station with the cash. As instructed Shanmughavel went to the spot, while policemen in plainclothes followed him from a safe distance.

“When one suspect identified as Sankar, 24, approached Shanmughavel to collect the bag containing cash in exchange of the boy, the police team overpowered him and rescued the boy. Later his associate, Suresh, 24, an ex-employee of Shanmughavel, was also nabbed,” the police said. Sankar had abducted the boy in a two-wheeler from the apartment complex.

Shanmughavel is electrical contract businessman. Sankar, of Rajapalayam, was in need of Rs 1 lakh urgently and his friend Suresh suggested the kidnap idea, the police said.
