Coonoor: GSDC against Indian ban on importing special breed

However, Nilgiris is the best as the weather in the hills is very optimum to the liking of this breed.

Coonoor: “German Shepherd breeding industry is doing well in India, but the recent ban imposed by the government of India on import of this breed may affect the continuation of the addition of its blood line in future,” said Sanjay Desai, secretary of the German Shepherd Dog Confederation (GSDC) of India, who also donned the duty of judge in the show on Sunday.

Stating that ‘German Shepherd’ breed constitutes nearly 55 per cent of dog breeds in India, he said that 18 chapters of GSDC function across the country which encourages ‘German Shepherd’ breeding and rearing by periodically conducting seminars and related events.

“The German Shepherd population ranges from 9,000 to 10,000 in India. This breed is being used as sniffer dog in army and police. The specialty of this breed is that it adapts easily to the different environment zones in the country.

However, Nilgiris is the best as the weather in the hills is very optimum to the liking of this breed. The very appearance, shape stamina and intelligence of this breed is certainly something very attractive and elegant,” said Desai.

Sanjit Kumar Mohanty, another judge at the show, has a very unique record as he is the only Indian who is a SV judge (International) meaning that he was trained and certified by Verein für deutsche Schäferhunde (SV) in Germany, a German Shepherd Association in Germany, the place of origin of German Shepard.

Explaining how Max von Stephanitz, in late 1800’s traveled across the Germany to combine related shepherd breeds to develop German Shepherd, Mohanty said that the reason behind developing this breed is to develop a breed that covers maximum ground with minimum effort and effortless transmission of energy from behind the body to the front to run with pace and style.
