Mr Singh is due to return on January 31. The government has written to the Centre requesting an additional three months for Mr Singh, but has not received a reply so far.

With a couple of days left for Mr Singh to retire, officials said there were little chances of the officer getting an extension. If the Centre were to have approved it, it would have intimated the state government by now, a source said.

The government, however, has initiated the exercise to find a new Chief Secretary. This is being done in the normal course, an official said.

Before Mr Singh was appointed Chief Secretary, the government had written to the Centre requesting extension of services for then Chief Secretary Pradeep Chandra but the Centre did not accept it.

In the event that Mr Singh does not get an extension, Special Chief Secretary (irrigation) S.K. Joshi will be the new Chief Secretary..
