Soon, you will be able to cycle on Cubbon Road

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George has announced that the BBMP will build a dedicated bicycle track of 15 km on KG Road, Cubbon Road and Sarjapura Road in Koramangala, as a part of the bicycle sharing system implemented by DULT.

In a social media post he stated, "It will be built on both sides of road and will be 1.8 metres wide. Tracks will have physical barricades, pelican signals and speed breakers. It will be completed by mid-2018."

"The pilot phase includes three roads. We have got permission for constructing the cycle lane in Cubbon Road and the work has begun. It will be complete in two months. The one on K.G. Road will start from Mysore Bank Circle till Dhanavantri Road," an official source said.

The source added that the design of Sarjapur Road is yet to be finalized. It has been kept on hold due to current road widening work.

On January 19th, DULT held a meeting with bicycle operators to get their suggestions on the permit system floated, inviting private players. They consulted their cycle day core group for advise as well.

One of the core members, Shashidhara Kumaraswamy explained the infrastructure used in Western countries.

"The pelican signals are generally placed in busy intersections for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. The cyclist presses the button after a group of cycles accumulate at the intersection. The signal starts off a noise, to give an indication to speeding cars about priority for the cyclist group.," Kumaraswamy said.

"As for speed breakers, it is the small plastic bubble like structure that is placed on the road surface. It slows down the cycle when there is a curvature on the road and the cyclist has to turn left or right," he added.

Rs 80 crore is being spent for Phase 1 on building the software, docking stations, maintenance, infrastructure and operation across 28 square kilometeres. The nine areas to benefit are HSR, Koramangala, M.G. Road, Vidhana Soudha, Indiranagar, Banaswadi, HRBR Layout, HBR Layout, and Kacharakanahalli.
