Shantinagar residents up in arms against GHMC
Hyderabad: Shantinagar residents held a demonstration against GHMC claiming that its negligent attitude had given private parties to build and run hostels in the area.
Shantinagar Welfare Association president L. Raja Reddy claimed that one individual had sought GHMC’s permission to build a G+1 structure but erected a G+4 structure on 160 sq yard land. The complainant said that the owner later converted the building into a hostel which now accommodates some 500 students. This has turned to be a nuisance in the residential area.
Mr Reddy said that overuse of water at the hostel had led to choking of sewerage pipelines which were designed to cater to the area’s population of about 1,000.
A senior GHMC official said that after this issue was brought to his notice, he instructed officials to demolish the unauthorised construction immediately. He, however, said that there no provision in the GHMC Act to cancel the permission to run a hostel even if was located in a residential area.
