RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat meets Sattradhikars heads of Vaishnavite monasteries in Assam

Guwahati: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat, who is on a three-day visit to Assam, on Thursday visited the river island Majuli where he had meeting with ‘Sattradhikars’---heads of Vaishnavite monasteries.

Informing that Mr Bhagwat had discussions on a number of issues, including religious conversions, with the tribal people and the heads of several vaishnavite monasteries during his stay, sources said that Mr Bhagwat will also have a meeting likely with an IPS officer of Assam-Meghalaya cadre Mr Anand Mishra who has recently resigned from services as Superintendent of Police in Lakhimpur district to pursue his social works.

It is significant that Mr Mishra was also part of a Special Investigation Team assigned to probe violence in Manipur.

Mr Mishra is said to have exploring possibility of joining politics and may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his home state of Bihar to contest the upcoming Lok sabha election from Buxar.

Mr Mishra's resignation, effective from January 16, 2024, was driven by his desire to achieve personal and social goals beyond the scope of his duties as an IPS officer.

Mr Mishra however told reporters that he resigned from the service to fulfill some social responsibility in his native village which does not have basic health and other facilities. He said that he had very high regard for police service but it was not possible to fulfill social responsibilities by remaining in police service.He also confirmed his meeting with Mr Bhagwat but clarified that it was simply a courtesy call on.

After his meetings in Majuli, Mr Bhagwat is scheduled to travel to Dibrugarh, spend the night there, and meet with other state RSS leaders.

A spokesperson of RSS said that the outcome of these discussions should have a significant impact on how the organisation approaches the current social issues in the region.

Meanwhile, the state government has made elaborate security arrangements in and around Majuli during the visit of Mr Bhagwat.
