HYDERABAD: Leave facility for migrant workers have been cancelled in Qatar ahead of the FIFA World Cup slated for November 2022. Large numbers of migrant workers from India, especially Telangana, are working in Qatar.

Usually, after the completion of two years of work, the migrant workers are eligible for leave to visit their families in India.

However, the Qatar authorities have cancelled the leave facility to migrant workers and suggested that they avail their leave during the FIFA World Cup period. It is learnt that an aim behind the decision is to avoid traffic snarls during the FIFA World Cup.

Various companies in Qatar, where Indian workers are sizeable, told them orally not to avail leave up to August 2022. As a result, hundreds of Indian workers stayed back in Qatar.

A few companies allowed migrant workers to return to their native places if any emergency arose. Migrant workers can avail of 4 to 5 months’ leave from August 2022.
