Footpath riding: 250 booked in 10 days

In a few months, we want to ensure that the footpaths are pedestrian friendly,” the officer added.

Bengaluru: Following numerous complaints about the menace posed by footpath riding to pedestrians, the city police have now stepped up their drive and booked more than 250 cases in 10 days.

Initially, they were registering FIRs against the offenders, but now they are penalising them and ensuring that their driving licence is suspended.

A senior traffic police officer said, “In our social media platforms and other mediums, we have been flooded with complaints about footpath riding. We now want the motorists think twice before riding on a footpath. Hence, we have started registering FIRs, penalising and suspending their licence.”

“From January onwards, we will post policemen in plainclothes to nab the offenders during peak hours. We have already made a list of places that are rampant for footpath riding. In a few months, we want to ensure that the footpaths are pedestrian friendly,” the officer added.

Another officer mentioned that they have written a letter to the BBMP requesting them to place bollards at various intervals on the footpath to prevent motorists riding on them.

“The BBMP along with the jurisdictional police are already on the process of identifying the vulnerable places and have been taking measures to install bollards, which will be placed for every 100 to 150 metres. If the bollards are placed, then motorists would not get onto the footpath to ride,” the officer added.
