Karnataka govt defers placing panel report on internal quota

The powerful SC Right group, headed by leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Dr G. Parameshwar are opposed to the move.

Bengaluru: Under pressure from the party colleagues, the government deferred placing the Justice A.J. Sadashiva report on internal reservation before the cabinet, as promised by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Social Welfare Minister H. Anjaneya recently.

During a public function of the Madiga community at Dharwad, the participants had not allowed Mr Siddaramaiah for over 15 minutes, urging him to implement the Sadashiva Committee report to bring in internal reservation.

The internal reservation will help the SC Left group, which has leaders like Mr K.H. Muniyappa and Mr Anjaneya amongs others. However, the powerful SC Right group, headed by leaders like Mallikarjun Kharge and Dr G. Parameshwar are opposed to the move.

To save himself from embarrassment for the moment, Mr Siddaramaiah directed Mr Anjaneya to bring the report before the cabinet, where he could take a decision on the issue. He also told the audience that no immediate decision could be taken.

Mr Anjaneya went one step ahead and said that he would even risk his life to bring in internal reservation system. He promised to place the report before the next cabinet meeting. However, soon after the announcement, Mr Siddaramaiah began receiving signals of right-wing annoyance and decided to keep the issue on hold, sources said.
