AP to spend Rs 26 crore to develop sanctuary and lake

Mr Sanjeevaiah questioned the rational behind holding the festival when the turnout of migratory birds is meager.

Nellore: State government has released Rs 26 crore to develop Nelapattu Bird’s Sanctuary, Pulicat lake and boating facilities at Bhimulavaripalem as part of tourism development programme. In-charge Minister Sidda Raghava Rao has revealed this after inaugurating the Flamingo Festival at Sullurpeta on Tuesday.

The programme witnessed heated exchanges after the MLC Vakati Narayan Reddy took serious objection to criticism by Sullurpeta YSR Congress legislator K. Sanjeevaiah alleging lack of development in the region. Mr Sanjeevaiah questioned the rational behind holding the festival when the turnout of migratory birds is meager.

The legislator, who almost walked out of the venue to register his protest for inviting MLC Vakati Narayana Reddy on to the stage instead of him ignoring the protocol, retuned after Vakati Narayana Reddy and officials pacified him. He alleged that he was facing similar humiliations every year. He also lambasted the ruling party for not implementing the promises made in the past to develop Sullurpeta region. He also alleged that the government failed to lay roads to Pernadu and Venadu which are homes for migratory birds.

Speaking after the episode Mr Narayana Reddy reminded that the government has allotted Rs 2 crore to the festival to tap the tourism potential in the region.
