VISAKHAPATNAM: Andhra Pradesh may witness rains till end of the year due to the ongoing weather system and continuation of northwest monsoon till December 26.
The northwest monsoon began on October 25 soon after withdrawal of southwest monsoon.
Andhra Pradesh received an excess rainfall of 39 per cent above normal in November this year during the northwest monsoon. The average fall has been 34.2 cm against the normal of 24.9 cm. Similarly, the state received 19 per cent excess rainfall during southwest monsoon too from June 1 to September 30.
“If conditions are good, the northwest monsoon may spill over to January next year,” IMD director S. Stella observed.
Meanwhile, the cyclonic circulation over Comorin area and adjoining Sri Lanka coasts extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level continued persisting on Saturday. It may intensify into a low-pressure area over south Andaman Sea around Monday. It is likely to become more marked and move west-northwestwards during subsequent 48 hours. Under its influence, heavy rainfall, accompanied by squally winds, is likely in AP from December 3 to December 5.
Another weather official said continuous rains may lead to a drop in temperature during this winter.
