Chennai: Trenches constructed in Adyar zone to collect rainwater

The Adyar zone is a low-lying area and therefore water stagnates easily during rainfall, say experts.

Chennai: The corporation workers in the Adyar zone have constructed ducts in 38 different low-lying areas in four wards, to help conserve rainwater.

The Adyar zone is a low-lying area and therefore water stagnates easily during rainfall, say experts. “Since the area is also by the sea, there is always a need for freshwater recharge,” a corporation worker said.

These trenches, each measuring 15 feet in depth and 4.5 feet in breadth, are being constructed in 38 places, including on Beach Road, Muthulakshmi Road, Arundale Beach road in Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur, and Besant Nagar areas. “Trenches were constructed at the cost ofRs 20 lakh,” an officer said.

These trenches, which are bottomless but lined with concrete, ensure the rainwater will go to the ground, hence recharging it, he said. “The loose sand in the coastal area helps in ensuring water seeps in quickly,” the officer added.
