Supreme Court grants time for negotiations on car parking

The Bench acceded to the request and posted the matter for further hearing in the first week of February 2018.

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that the Chief Ministers of Kerala and Tamil Nadu would meet on December 11 with a view to resolving the dispute relating to mega car parking near the Mullaiperiyar dam area.

Additional Advocate General for Tamil Nadu Subramonium Prasad told a three judge Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Kanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud that in view of the meeting of the two Chief Ministers for a negotiated settlement the hearing on the issue might be deferred. The Bench acceded to the request and posted the matter for further hearing in the first week of February 2018.

The Tamil Nadu has been contending that the Kerala government cannot undertake the mega car parking in the Mullaiperiyar dam area as it was under the control of the Tamil nadu government though the area was under the Kerala territory. Kerala however said the area where car-parking facility was to be provided did not fall within the dam area and that it had all the necessary clearances for proceeding with the project.
