Libel suit against DIG Roopa
Bengaluru: Retired DGP H.N. Sathyanarayana Rao has filed a Rs 20 crore defamation case against DIG D. Roopa, who had accused him of facilitating special privileges in the jail, including a special kitchen to jailed AIADMK leader Sasikala, by receiving Rs 2 crore as bribe.
Mr Rao has moved a city civil court and included an English daily and a regional TV news channel in the defamation suit for making baseless allegations against him, when he was heading the prisons department. After admitting the petition, the court adjourned it for further hearing till December 12.
In July, Ms Roopa, who is Commissioner for Traffic & Road Safety now and DIG (Prisons) then, had alleged that Sasikala was getting special privileges at the Parappana Agrahara central prison and mentioned in her report that, 'there were rumours that Rs 2 crore was paid for this and unfortunately the allegation is against you (Mr Rao)' and had requested to carry out a probe. Her report had embarrassed the state government, which had ordered a high level probe into the allegations and had shunted out both Mr Rao and Ms Roopa from the prisons department.
