Andhra Pradesh: Indian Meteorological Department DG proposes a research consortium

Visakhapatnam: The Indian Meteorological Department Director General of Meteorology, K.J. Ramesh, proposed a Research Consortium involving all the institutions of Andhra Pradesh focusing on science and technology. He stressed on this while addressing the gathering at the three-day National Seminar, on 'Impact of Climate Change on Extreme Weather Events' and 'the Indian Ocean' that began at AU TLN Saba Hall, here on Monday.

"The educational institutions like the IITs and IIScs have played a huge role in helping the IMD to develop its early cyclone warning system. The research bodies and the science and technology-driven institutes in the state, especially the nine coastal districts, should form a research consortium, where they can share ideas and work on them to find solutions for local issues like for early warning system, coastal erosion to ensure sustainable development,” said the IMD DGM.

He also added that though the frequency of the sea weather systems causing cyclones in the Indian Ocean is low, compared to other oceans, the intensity has been increasing. “There were cyclones occurring earlier too. But, the impact of the disaster is high, as the concentration of population along the coastal areas is heavy due to job opportunities and many other factors,” he said.
