Rs 31 crore cash, Rs 1 crore worth liquor seized so far

Chief electoral officer says focus on stopping flow of illegal cash before polls.

Hyderabad: Over Rs 31.41 crore in cash and liquor worth '1 crore has been seized by the officials in Telangana state since the announcement of the State Assembly election schedule early this month.

Chief electoral officer Rajat Kumar on Saturday said that the Election Commission has been taking strict measures to check the illegal flow of money and liquor ahead of elections.

He said that the commission had sought a report from the DGP over the alleged phone tapping complaints lodged by Opposition parties against the TRS.

Mr Rajat Kumar said that the commission had also sought a report from the Andhra Pradesh DGP over the alleged deployment of Andhra Pradesh police and intelligence staff in various Assembly constituencies in Telangana.

Referring to complaints on TS Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao misusing his official camp office cum residence “Pragathi Bhavan” by holding TRS party meetings and other such complaints on the ministers, he said the commission will seriously examine them and necessary action will be taken as this issue attracts election code of conduct.

Mr Rajat Kumar said voters can enrol till November 9 and urged people to utilise the opportunity, if their names are not found in the voters’ list.

“We have laid more focus on preventing illegal flow of money and liquor before the polls. We are holding discussions with officials of neighbouring states bordering Telangana to check this menace,” he stated.

He said 22 companies of central forces have already arrived in the state to ensure smooth conduct of polls.

“We have seized six unlicensed arms, 7,411 licensed arms were deposited, 8,622 PD cases were booked, 43,101 bindover cases were filed and 3,765 warrants were issued,” he said.
