Kochi: Collector no' to digging roads for laying of pipes

He said that these agencies should get sanction from the State Government through the PWD Secretary.

Kochi: District Collector Muhammed Y Safirulla on Saturday informed the District Development Council meet that BSNL, KSEB and KWA will not be allowed to dig roads for pipe laying works. He said that these agencies should get sanction from the State Government through the PWD Secretary.

The decision has been taken in the wake of widespread complaints on road digging, bad shape of roads and the visit by PWD Minister G Sudhakaran on Friday who put the blame on the Collector for the situation.

A demand came up in the meet to resume sand quarrying from rivers since a lot of sand has been deposited in the rivers in the aftermath of the floods. Muvattupuzha MLA Eldho Abraham raised this demand. He said that Kothamangalam, Piravom and Koothattukulam areas are suitable for this. He said that this can create a lot of job opportunities and panchayats can increase the flow to their funds.

Thrikkakara MLA P.T. Thomas stressed on the need to realizing the Periyar Valley Irrigation Project which has been hanging fire for the past 48 years.

The District Collector ordered Thrikkakara Municipal Secretary to explore the possibility of finding space to relocate 20 houses which are now located in the project site, if Life Mission delays finding space for them.

The Collector also ordered the Municipal Secretary to take action against the hospital which has been functioning without permission at M.K. Complex at Edappally.
