Chennai: Oragadam factories fined over unhygenic premises

The collector immediately ordered a penalty of Rs 1 lakh on the plant and demanded that it be cleaned as soon as possible.

Chennai: The Kanchipuram district collector on Saturday came down heavily on several industries in Oragadam for hygiene violations.

The collector, P. Ponniah, along with revenue and local body officials and health department officials inspected several factories along with the assistance of the pollution control board.

During the check, the officials found scrap metal and piles of iron rods discarded at the plant of Daimler India, a heavy vehicle’s factory. These had stagnated water and several mosquito larvae in it, the officials said.

The collector immediately ordered a penalty of Rs1 lakh on the plant and demanded that it be cleaned as soon as possible.In another company, Renault Nissan, some potential stagnated water was present but no mosquitoes were found in it. Therefore, the collector let them off with a severe warning.

He has appealed to all factories in the area to keep their campuses clean or severe action would be taken, he said adding that the checks and inspections would continue.
