60 families evacuated from Musi banks
HYDERABAD: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) evacuated 60 families at Shankar Nagar which is on the banks of the Musi. The evacuees were sent to schools and masjids in the neighbourhood. Officials said inflows from the upstream were subsiding and field level staff were closely motoring the high-risk areas.
Speaking to this newspaper, Charminar zonal commissioner N. Ashok Samrat said about 60 families comprising 250 members were shifted to safer locations. He said the authorities would provide free food from Annapurna canteens until the flood at Moosarambagh subsided.
The official said the municipal staff in coordination with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), revenue and police had been closely monitoring the inflows. He said as the majority of gates were opened at Himayatsagar and Osmansagar, the inflows subsided by evening and the gates would be eventually closed by Wednesday.
The Hyderabad police advised people in areas on the banks of the river to be alert. Due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the Musi river, flash floods may come after midnight. The police said it would be better to be alert in the low-lying areas on Musi bank including Kishanbagh, Ziaguda, Puranapul, MGBS, Chaderghat, Amberpet, Puranapul, Attapur and Golnaka. The GHMC directed all deputy commissioners and zonal commissioners of Golconda, Asif Nagar, Bahadurpura, Nampally, Charminar, Himayath Nagar and Saidabad to be on high alert.
Meanwhile, major roads in Hyderabad were flooded, forcing motorists to wade through knee-deep water with extreme caution. Extensive waterlogging also triggered traffic gridlocks at several stretches in the city. A large number of low-lying areas were facing flood-like situations, and GHMC workers and personnel from police and traffic, did their best to provide relief and ensure there were no water logging points. The personnel from traffic police were seen clearing water-logging at many places including Bahadurpura, Chilkalguda, Ranigunj and Sultan Bazar.
With heavy rains remaining active for the entire day on Monday, the flood was so intense that even relief workers had to face tough times.
