COIMBATORE: In a major mix-up in identifying bodies, a grieving family was given a ‘wrong body’ after post-mortem at Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH).
While the body was also cremated unknowingly by the family, the issue came to light only when another family raised an issue seeking the body.
According to police, Subramanian, 55, a resident of Periyayepalayam-Eshwaran Koil street in Tirupur, who was working as a tailor in a garments factory, met with an accident a couple of days ago.
He succumbed to injuries at CMCH without responding to treatment on Tuesday.
After post-mortem, the body was kept in the mortuary. Meanwhile, Gopal, 52, a resident from Thudiyaloor died in a road mishap recently and his body was also kept at the mortuary of CMCH after post-mortem.
In the evening, as many as 15 bodies were placed out of the mortuary to be handed over to the respective families.
The hospital staff claimed that they had left the bodies out as there was a delay in the arrival of the mortuary vans.
However, what followed was a serous goof up, as Subramanian’s body was taken by Gopal’s relatives and cremated in Thudiyalur.
Meanwhile, Subramanian’s relatives besieged the hospital demanding to handover the body. They found fault with the staff of CMCH for being so irresponsible. The issue came to an end almost an hour after the hospital officials and police pacified the angry relatives of Subramainan.
